Deer Crossing

Caution burnishes leaves, turning
to match the road, signs
beat into submission, standing
tall, but crooked with time's

passive urgency, warning
"deer crossing;"
at season's threshold. Winter
knocks at my door, tentatively answered

with un-gloved hands,
chafed in love;
with experience, cold.

Change, seasons
viewing colors' caution;
cross now, the waiting road...

  1. Did you know that deer/car collisions peak in the fall? It is the rutting and mating season compounded also with the start of the deer hunting season. The deer are more active as they flee both kinds of hunters, buck and men. So watch out my dear deer friends and also pay heed drivers to those "Deer Crossing" signs.
    Oh, I found it interesting the if you live in Iowa 1 out of every 67 cars will hit a deer this fall (ranked 2nd in the nation), Nebraska 1 out of 111 drivers (12th in the ranking), and in Colorado one in every 366 cars will hit a deer. The most dangerous state for car/deer collision is West Virginia with a 1 in 42 chance of colliding with a deer.
